A Day Painting ~ Plein Air

A Day Painting, My first Plein Air Experience

I have taken a sketch book with me to many places and adventures. I have never painted in open air, "Plein Air". I decided to go to our local fishing lake and set up and try my hand at Plein Air.

When  I arrived I walked around, to pick out a spot far way away from the fishermen and traffic. I found the perfect spot. I knew that, I would only have about an hour to an hour and a half of painting time, due to the sun's moment.

I knew that after I set up.....light on my subject would change...this would change the values and shadows of what I was seeing.

Now, the fun begins.... I learned a lot about me, Glen Springs Lake, and paint!

  • Me ~ I learned I could do it!! I could set with my back to the parking lot, and paint. It may not be a painting to win awards or hang in someone's home....but, it will be a painting from start to finish and I had no worries about who might peer over my shoulder.
  • Glen Springs Lake ~ a beautiful place, full of color and life. I could paint every day at the lake and never touch its beauty, wonder, color, mood, etc.... the lake will never run out of something of beauty for me to paint.
  • Paint~ I learned a few lessons from my paint. I learned that paint dries differently outside in the warm summer air..faster than in my studio. I learned the colors look so much brighter and the hues show their true beauty in the sun. The main lesson, and the most important is to know my colors.. what will each color when used together will create another color.. to achieve the color that I want. I  will never again take for grant my colors. I will take the time to study the colors around me and use the colors together to create the colors that I need.

I know that I have a  wonderful adventure waiting for me... I look forward to many more days in the open air painting. I am thankful that I am blessed to live so close to a beautiful lake to paint. I know that the lake will teach me many lessons thus, helping me to become a better painter and the gift to see the beauty that the Lord has created around me.

If you are ever out my way, bring your paints, sit and join me as we catch the work of our Lord on our canvas...while the fishermen catch the fish!  ~ Tarina
